Well Nick we didn't say we'd be dissappointed if we didn't sign him, we're just saying that there's the possibility that we never had the intention of signing him. Also, the Red Sox could be lying about trying to get a deal done, because if they didn't say that, they'd lose so much respect for just keeping him from the Yankees.
Also, I think that to avoid cheap things like this, they should shorten the negotiation period to 15 days and go down to the next highest bid until he gets signed.

not bad. except for his japan team.
and i guarnantee they didnt do that to keep him form the yankees. they want him on the team, and he said he wants to pitch in boston. they wouldnt do that in profession sports in my opinion.

I don't know how you can guarantee that. I'm sure they do WANT him on the team, but is it worth it. I think they made the high bid originally to keep him from the Yankees, and at this point since they did win, they ARE trying to sign him... get something out of it with nothing to lose.
But in other free agent news... Alfonso Soriano to the Cubs for 8 years $136 millionish.

Before I say my next point, who are you talking about when you say "they could have gotten Zito or Schmidt for much less money."? The Sox or the Yanks?

the sox. if they just planned on outbiding tha yankees why not just not bid on him, let the yankees pay all that, and sign proven guys fo r less money
im not saying they should have done that, just if they did this to outbid the yanks

Valid point, Nick.
You never know how Japanese guys will make the transfer/how good they'll be when playing not AAA material.

Well, if we were going to go after Schmidt of Zito (are we pressing for them?) than I don't see why not bid high to keep Daisuke from the Yankees anyways.

bc then we dont have 50 million dollars for a month. that could make a difference.

Well we know we're getting the $50 million back... so it's not like we weren't using the 50 million, since if that was our plan, we would ignore it since we'd get the money back.

ik but iwhat im saying is not having that money for one month could make a difference in signing those guys. like they cold want more money and we wouldnt have it until the 30 days are up and then they sign with a different team.
