It better be at least 5 years for the 51.1 million dollars to be worth it.
Also, even if the Yankees didn't want him, if they got the refund, why wouldn't they just bid like 60 million then not sign him just so that he didnt go to us?

did the mariners have to bid a lot to talk with ichiro. I think what will happen is the sox will sign his for the 3 years then the yanks will just pay him a rediculous amount of money when hes in his prime and itll still be less than what the sox are paying. if this guys turns out to be bad do you think theo will get fired immidiately

They bid $13 million, which makes me think that this guy has to be special.
And no, I doubt Theo would get fired because I'm sure John Henry played a big role in this whole situation. I'm sure he gave the okay easily because he put forward $51 million of his own money, so I'm sure he knew what was up, and was willing to accept the consequences if it goes bad.

Well, yes, but I'm not sure Theo would put this much on the line for a risk. I doubt he'll get fired. Also, did anyone ever think about it if the Red Sox just bid high so that the Yankees couldn't talk to Matsuzaka, and they just plan on getting the money back? I think that may be practical.

I don't know why they would do that. Cause if they didn't sign him, then he's back on the market in 30 days, meaning the Yankees can sign him WITHOUT paying that extra 52 million that would have beat the Red Sox offer. If we did that, the Yankees would get an extra 52 million bucks to buy another old player.

No. If we don't sign him in 30 days he pitches for the Seibu Lions and is a free agent next year.

I doubt it'll be 15 mill. I say if we sign him it won't be any more than 12,13 million. Do you realize that we'd be paying more for this guy per year than A-Rod gets? The Sox won't let that happen. That'd be 4 years and a total of $111.1 million dollars.

Yeah, Dyl, that's what my dad was speculating too, that the Sox just bid so high just to block the Yanks.
The next closest team bid like $30 mill or something like that, so such a ridiculous bid seems unnecessary for the Red Sox to do...Cozy doesn't know why they would do that if only to discourage other teams from outbidding them.
That said, He's sure that if they can find some reasonable agreement, they'll still go for it.
It'll be interesting for Boras though...he's in a position where he can't use his normal tactics b/c if the Sox don't agree to whatever ridiculous offer Boras tries, then he doesn't make any money either. He will want a deal to get done as much as anybody, so maybe everyone can agree on something reasonable.

if they did that just so the yankees didnt get them it be stupid. theyll just get him next year when hes a free agent. and id lose respect for htem if they did that.

Well, yeah, but it improves our chances for this year. And we know the Yanks will pay anything to get him next year if we don't end up signing, so really all we would do is delay it a year, and one big pitcher is the difference between, eh, a division title and not a division title.

Yeah...a year's delay is still worth something: A better chance that particular year. And Cozy Slik would like that.

Especially if the Yanks would still get Zito and/or Schmidt... certainly at least one of them.
