As this signing period is going along for major league baseball, I keep seeing big deals including soriano to the cubs, pierre and nomah to the dodgers, sheffield to the tigers, thomas to the jays, etc. This got me thinking other than d-mat, jd drew and the resiging of alex cora, are the sox gonna do anything this offseason. The signing of d-mat and drew arent even guaranteed and I didnt even know cora was a free agent. Is it too early to start wondering that the sox wont do anything big this offseason?
Gonzo signed with the Reds, pissed cause I was hoping he would come back to have a nice dp combo with pedroia Catalanatto signed with the Rangers, kinda pissed cause I thought he would be a quality replacement of Nixon if we didnt sign Drew. Speier also signed with the Angels, kinda pissed about this too cause he was rumored to be one of our options for closer

This is what Ian Browne, RedSox.com beat writer says:
OK, here is my best guess. Julio Lugo SS; Coco Crisp CF; Ortiz DH; Ramirez LF; JD Drew RF; Kevin Youkilis 1B; Varitek C; Mike Lowell 3B; Pedroia 2B. And then a starting rotation of Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett, Papelbon, Matsuzaka and Wakefield.
He obviously knows what he's talking about, so I guess we must have a good chance at Lugo, Drew, and Matsuzaka. Also in the article, it says we have a good shot at getting Gagne for cheap.

I actually just read that and I was coming on here to delete this thread because if we get d-mat, lugo, drew, and gagne, it will be a successful offseason in my opinion

D-Mat could be the nastiest pitcher ev, JD Drew has had some amazing breakout years, and Cora is utility-man extroardinare. If we lose Manny, then it was a bad offseason.

does anyone know hwat the market is for mark mulder? i think he could be a good pitcher in boston. if hes not asking for too much and a lot of teams dont want him why not go for him? u can never have enough pitching as we leanred last year. if that happened we could possibly put paps back at closer if we sign matzu. even though i want paps in the rotation, jw why i havent heard anything even being said about mulder. hes a good pitcher.

I agree with that statement about Mulder and Im replying to say that the reason paps is moving to the rotation is his shoulder. He cant take the everyday wear and tear of a closer because his shoulder cant take it. Thats why he got injured last year. If he does a routine where he knows when hes pitching, such as starting, the shoulder will be fine.

i wouldnt mind that pena for cordero deal. pena was good but he has a lot to improve. he struck out a lot and didnt play great defense. cordero had a rough year last year but the year before he was amazing. i would like that if it were to happen. even though bowden denied it.

I wouldn't mind either, as long as we sign Drew. But, that also closes the trading window for Coco Crisp. So, if we can get a better deal for Coco I say obviously keep Pena and trade Coco.

Pena did very good in center last year. Yes, obviously Coco was amazing, but Pena is no slouch. If we get a better deal for Coco that makes up for his defense we should do it.

I'm not very comfortable with Pena getting a large amount of playing time though. I like him getting Alex Cora or less amount. Remember that walk-off from last year. Holy duke.

Wily Mo will be very productive if he gets consistent at bats. He was injured a decent amount last year, which brought down his power numbers. Two years before, he had 26 homers in 336 at bats. That was at age 22. At age 23 he hit 19 homers in 311 at bats. Last year, he had 11 homers in 276 at bats. Now he is somewhat more patient at the plate, and at 25 next season, ready to start in my opinion. He has TREMENDOUS power potential. His OBP last year was not terrible, at .349, and he hit .301. If he can maintain this patience, although not great, his power will keep him in the lineup. All he needs is a chance, a complete season. In his career, he averages a homer every 17.77 at bats. If he plays a whole season, let's say 550 at bats, he would get 31 homers. As long as he has an OBP above .340, I'm fine with that. We should have a backup plan, though, and I think that David Murphy will be a solid backup plan by midseason.
And yes, Thoos, if you're talking about that LASER shot off the monster.
