Justin Verlander won the rookie of the year in one of the best Rookie of Year races in a long time. Between Paps injury on September 1, and Liriano's injuries, you kind of had to give it to Justin Verlander, seeing as his team went places, and the Sox sunk. Johjima played well too, finishing fourth in the voting, with Jered Weaver somehow finishing fifth, when most other seasons, he'd have won it. Here's how the voting went:
Player, Club...........................................1st.2nd.3rd.Points Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers.................26...1..........133 Jonathan Papelbon, Boston Red Sox.................20...3......63 Francisco Liriano, Minnesota Twins.............1....3...16.....30 Kenji Johjima, Seattle Mariners..........................2....4......10 Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels....................2....2.......8 Nick Markakis, Baltimore Orioles..................1..........2.......7 Ian Kinsler, Texas Rangers....................................1.......1
Somehow Nick Markakis got a first place vote from some drunk guy and Ian Kinsler got a vote period. You guys think this voting went about right?
Cant really understand the table because apparently more than one space doesn't work on this...

Wow, everyone should definitely have Verlander, Liriano, and Papelbon as the top 3, and maybe Weaver, but idk how these people even got votes... mainly Kinsler and Markakis.

you cant really argue with verlander, and you could make a case for either him or paps or liriano. really nothing to say

well markakis went liek a little stretch of havin a few consecutive games of hitting a homer so obviously they'll be someone to vote for him just like in the MVP race where jason giambi will get a vote it happens for every race. I expected better results form weaver even though he came in a little later he went 11-2 with a 2.56.idk i thought he deserved a better placing the johima

Not saying that Verlander didn't deserve to win it, because Cozy Slik believes he did, but it is funny to point out that compared to last year's AL Rookie of the Year, Huston Street, Papelbon's ERA (this year) was about 0.80 lower, his WHIP about 0.25 lower, he had three more strikeouts (in 10 less innings), 13 less walks (he had 13 total, Street had 26) and had 12 more saves.
Again, Cozy Slik realizes that Papelbon shouldn't really have won, and also that for a of reasons its probably not fair to compare those numbers, but still, just thought it was interesting.

Verlander, Papelbon, Liriano, Weaver, and Johjima all would have won the Rookie of the Year if they were in it last year. Every one.

Maybe not Johjima. Street did have a good year last year. But yeah, very good point.
