If you take him out of that lineup, it goes Luis Castillo, Shannon Stewart, Joe Mauer, Michael Cuddyer, Torii Hunter.
That's a problem... after Cuddyer (24) and Hunter (31) the leading home run hitter is Mauer, with 13. That sucks the power and runs out of the lineup. The Red Sox would still have Manny, Trot, Youk, Lowell, and Varitek, all with power (although Trot and Varitek did not do well), plus the base hit hitters Loretta and Crisp. That still leaves one of the best hitters in the game, as well as 4 other solid home run hitters and run drivers.

thats a good point that the twins lineup is horrible without him, and they made the playoffs. you could make an argument for any of the top vote getters, but i just think ortiz should have won

That's extra incentive why it shouldn't be DJ. Yeah, he had a million injuries, but he STILL had one of the best lineups literally in the history of baseball. It was so no big if he was in or wasn't cause the rest of the team could easily man the load for a while.

I just read this on ESPN.com. There's more on the site but I'm not a member or whatever but here's what it says:
"I think all carping about the NL MVP voters getting their choice wrong must immediately cease. The AL's voters couldn't even correctly identify the most valuable Twin, never mind wrapping their heads around a whole league. The reality of baseball is that a great offensive player at an up-the-middle position is substantially more valuable than a slightly better hitter at a corner position. And when that up-the-middle player is one of the best fielders at his position in baseball, there's absolutely no comparison. Joe Mauer was more valuable than Justin Morneau this past season. If you don't understand that, you don't understand the first thing about baseball.
Mauer had a 54-point edge in OBP over Morneau, which overwhelms the advantage Morneau had in slugging percentage (a 52-point edge). But Mauer won the Gold Glove for his position this past year, and he is arguably the best-fielding catcher in the game when you consider all aspects of catching. Catchers who field and hit the way Mauer does are extremely valuable, just as shortstops who hit like Derek Jeter does and play passable defense are extremely valuable. First basemen who hit like Morneau just shouldn't win MVP awards in years when there are Mauers and Jeters and other candidates to choose from. "

You know Manny finished 7th overall for MVP voting. Hey, but there are some reallyyyyyy dumb voters.
Like a couple years ago, Pedro had an amazing season, I think it was 1999. He won the AL Cy young with ease. But when it came to the MVP voting he just barely lost to Ivan Rodriguez by something like 20 points. One voter claimed he never voted for pitchers for the MVP since a pitcher only pitches 5 days. That was his excuse for not even voting for him period, not first, not second, not third, not one-millionth. They did some looking at that guy who said that, and found that he had voted for multiple pitchers in the years before.
When there's people like that voting, that don't vote based on Most Valuable Player, and take other wierd things into account, such as racism, or personal experiences, then it just corrupts the entire system.

Wow. That's so true.
Also, I'm pretty sure I saw that Papi didn't get one first place vote. He definitely should have gotten a few (how many people vote for the MVP?).
Was that one of Pedro's triple crown years?

i looked up his stats. he had an amazing year
he went 23-4 with a 2.03 era. 5 complete games and 1 shutout. 213 ip and only 49 earned runs. and to top it off 313 k's
and what do you mean by triple crown? is that like wins era strikeouts or something?

I wouldn't say common, but it's much more common than the hitting triple crown. I'm pretty it's probably happened about 4 times in the past 10 years (Rocket, Pedro, Johan). There's also the "quadruple crown" which also includes innings, which Johan got this year.
